My UN YPP Journey
UN YPP 2024

What is a UN YPP Roster?

After you pass all stages of the YPP recruitment process (Application, Multiple-choice questions, Written Test, Panel Interview), you are successfully accepted on a UN YPP Roster - a list of successful candidates.

You do not get a job automatically after succeeding in the YPP process.

All successful applicants are placed on the Roster for up to three years.

So how does a YPP get a job?

When you are on a roster, hiring managers from different UN Global Communications roles across different locations can review profiles for potential job matches. This system ensures that cleared candidates are continuously considered for positions within the UN system, enhancing their chances of securing a role over time.

As a successful candidate, every 3 months you go through a placement exercise – you essentially receive an email with the positions currently open in your job family, for which your candidate profile will be automatically considered.

What are the strategies you can pick for getting the job you want?

If you do not get a YPP job within 3 years, your name will be removed from the roster. Putting your roster membership on hold does not affect this deadline.

  • You must accept the first job offered to you from the YPP list. If you do not accept the first job, you are disqualified from the YPP. This is why it is so important to be strategic about what you want!

  • You can accept other UN jobs in the meantime, and some of them could even help further build your candidate profile for your first YPP post.

  • The thematic YPPs are announced in cycles of around 3 years.

What is your message to others wishing to pass the YPP this year?

I am very happy that I never thought of the YPP as the only path I had forward. I focused on living my life, developing skills, and looking for other opportunities that ultimately allowed me to:

  • Have some distance from this process and not put all my eggs in one basket, which definitely took away some of the pressure during the long recruitment process.

  • Continue focusing on doing my job well rather than counting on getting a YPP appointment.

  • Strategize my career in different ways - I have since then been able to secure an official position with the OECD.

  • Pivot away from communications into other areas, which I would not have done if I had thought of the YPP as my only opportunity.

  • Respect my own individual priorities, like deepening my roots and personal connections in Paris, where my partner also lives.

Thank you Marcio for sharing all your YPP insider insights!
